Concrete for Horse Properties

Anthony sits on County Road 200A, also known as Jacksonville Road, in the horse country north of Ocala, and most calls to concrete contractors here involve farm properties. The community had postal service from 1877 and was platted in 1883, when the railroad reached it. It was named for E. C. Anthony, one of the people who started the town, incorporated in 1892 during the phosphate mining era and disincorporated in 1932 during the Great Depression.

Horse farm concrete, piece by piece

Marion County's first Thoroughbred farm was founded in 1943, and today the county counts more than 1,200 horse farms, with its roughly 900 Thoroughbred farms covering some 77,000 acres. Anthony is part of that landscape, near farms and equestrian venues. Horse properties use concrete in specific ways:

Wash racks. A slab sloped to a drain, with a deep texture or grooves so horses do not slip when wet.

Barn aisles. A broom or swirl finish for grip, with the slope running out the ends of the barn.

Tack and feed rooms. Smoother, sealed floors that are easy to sweep and keep dry.

Trailer parking. Thick, reinforced pads where a loaded horse trailer sits for long periods.

Manure and compost pads. Curbed slabs that keep runoff contained.

Weight, hooves and water

Three things wear farm concrete faster than anything else: heavy wheels, steel shoes and standing water. We address each one. Truck and trailer areas get thicker sections, rebar and a base compacted in layers. Areas where horses walk get a finish with enough texture for traction but not so rough that it scrapes hooves. Every slab is sloped so wash water and rain leave quickly, because water sitting on and under a slab softens the base and speeds up cracking.

Ground conditions

Marion County's rolling terrain rests on limestone, which supports the pasture that drew the horse industry here. In limestone country, sinkholes are more common where the rock sits close to the surface with little clay cover. For barn slabs and long drives, this means a careful look at the ground before we pour. We check for soft spots and low areas, compact fill properly and talk with you about anything that looks like more than normal settlement.

Homes on the farm

Farm owners need home concrete too. Driveways from the road to the house, patios with views across the pasture, stamped concrete entries and pool decks all come up. On large properties, a driveway can run hundreds of feet, so we plan joints along the full length and widen the apron where it meets Jacksonville Road or another county road.

Planning a barn slab before the build

If you are building a new barn, the slab plan should come before the walls. We work out where stalls, aisles, wash racks and tack rooms will go so each area gets the right finish and slope, and where drains and utility lines need to pass under the slab. Sleeves and drains are much easier to place before the pour than to cut in afterward, and planning them early keeps the build on schedule.

Repairing existing barn concrete

Older barn aisles and wash racks often wear smooth, which makes them slick. Where the slab is sound, we can add texture by grooving or resurfacing. Where it has cracked and sunk, we cut out the failed sections and repour them with the right slope and finish.

Permits

Anthony gave up its town charter in 1932, so permits today come from Marion County. We check the requirements for barns, slabs and new drives at the road before scheduling.

Anthony Questions

What finish should a horse wash rack have?

A deep texture or grooved finish that gives traction when wet, on a slab sloped to a drain so water leaves quickly.

How thick should a horse trailer parking pad be?

Thicker than a car driveway, with rebar and a well-compacted base. We size it for your trailer's loaded weight.

Can you pour a long driveway across my farm in Anthony?

Yes. We plan joints along the full length, widen the apron at the road and thicken areas where trucks turn.
