Rural Concrete Done Right

Weirsdale is a rural community near the intersection of State Road 25 and State Road 42 in southeastern Marion County, and the concrete contractors who work there spend a lot of time on long drives, outbuilding slabs and repairs to older farm concrete. A post office has operated in Weirsdale since 1892, and the community has historically centered on citrus packing.

Farm history, farm concrete

Citrus packing and farm life left behind the kind of concrete you find on working properties: old pads for packing sheds, slabs for equipment, aprons in front of barns. Much of it was poured without reinforcement or joints and has cracked or settled over the decades. When an owner wants to reuse an old pad for a new building, we check it first. A slab that has cracked into loose pieces or sunk at the corners will not support new walls, and it is usually better to remove it and pour fresh on a compacted base.

Railroad roots and Lake Weir

Rail reached the lake here about a decade after 1880, when a spur was run from a new station east of Whitesville to Lake Weir at Weirsdale. The lake covers 5,685 acres in southern Marion County, with a surface elevation of 52 feet. Homes near the lake share the lake country's concerns: sandy soil, slopes toward the water and boats that need a place to park. We plan trailer slabs with rebar and a deeper base, and slope lakeside patios so runoff spreads across the yard.

At the edge of the forest

The Ocala National Forest is close by: its Big Bass Lake campsite, the southernmost in the forest, is known as the halfway mark between Weirsdale and Altoona. The forest is known for its porous sands, which recharge the Floridan Aquifer. Those same sandy soils run under many rural lots in this part of the county. Sand drains well, which is good for a slab, but it shifts if it is not compacted. Every base we prepare is compacted in layers before the forms go in.

Projects common in Weirsdale

Long rural driveways. We plan joints along the full length and add a wider, thicker apron where the drive meets the road.

Barn aisles and equipment slabs. Broom or textured finishes for traction, with slopes that keep water out of stalls and storage areas.

Carports and workshop slabs. Thickened edges where posts or walls will sit.

Patios and pool decks. Shade patios and cooler, textured pool decks for country homes.

Stamped concrete. Stone-look entries and patios for owners who want a finished look.

Concrete repair. Crack sealing, step rebuilding and replacement of failed sections.

Where drives meet state roads

Weirsdale's location near State Road 25 and State Road 42 means some driveways meet state-maintained roads. A driveway meeting one of those roads has to handle fast traffic slowing to turn, and the apron edge takes a lot of stress. We build those aprons thicker, with a well-compacted base and a smooth transition. We also check what approvals are needed before any work at the road edge.

Part of the Ocala metro

Weirsdale is part of the Ocala Metropolitan Statistical Area, but it sits well out in the southeast corner of the county. For a large barn or equipment slab, we plan the pour in truckloads that arrive close together so the slab does not set up with a cold joint in the middle. We also ask owners to keep tractors, trailers and loaded trucks off new concrete until it has cured enough to carry them, and give you that date at the pour.

Permits

Weirsdale is unincorporated, so permits run through Marion County. We check what your project needs before scheduling, particularly for any work where your drive meets a state road.

Weirsdale Questions

Can I build a new barn on an old concrete pad in Weirsdale?

Only if the pad is sound. We check for cracks, settling and thickness. Many old farm slabs need to be removed and repoured before they can carry new walls.

What finish works for a barn aisle?

A broom or textured finish gives traction for people and animals, and we slope the aisle so water runs out rather than into stalls.

Do I need a permit where my driveway meets a state road?

Work at a public road edge can need a right-of-way permit. We check the requirements for your address before we start.
