Concrete on Old Farm Country

Summerfield is an unincorporated community near US 301 and County Road 475A in southern Marion County, and homeowners there call concrete contractors for everything from long rural driveways to patios on newer homes. A post office called Summerfield has operated since 1885, and the place name dates to 1888, when the town was renamed to honor Col. Adam G. Summer.

From cotton and cattle to cul-de-sacs

Summer moved to Marion County in 1856 and settled about 1,400 acres known as Watula or Long Hammock. In 1860 he brought in Brahman cattle from the East Indies. After the Civil War, he gave his former slaves parcels of land, and those families settled an area stretching from Belleview to the Sumter County line. The community that grew up here had a school, blacksmith shop, sawmill, gristmill, cotton gin and a shipping station, with cotton, oranges and vegetables as the main crops.

That farm history still shows in the land. Some properties are large and rural, some are older homes on family land, and others are newer houses. Each type brings different concrete needs.

What we pour on rural and family land

  • Long driveways from the road to a house set well back, with joints planned along the whole run
  • Barn and equipment slabs for tractors, feed storage and workshops
  • Carport slabs with thickened edges for posts
  • Wash pads sloped to a drain or gravel area for cleaning vehicles and equipment

On larger properties, we look at where trucks and trailers actually travel. A driveway that sees a feed truck or a loaded trailer needs more thickness and steel than one that only sees a sedan.

Newer homes and outdoor living

Newer homes in Summerfield tend to need the same things as other growing parts of southern Marion County: wider drives, back patios, stamped entries and pool decks. Stamped concrete in slate or flagstone patterns gives a patio a finished look and needs only periodic sealing. Pool decks get a textured, lighter finish that stays cooler in the sun and grips when wet.

Lakes, low spots and the railroad that went around

The early settlement of Whitesville, which became Summerfield, sat along the north shore of Summers Lake. In 1880 a landowner north of Whitesville refused the railroad a right of way, so a new station was built two miles east, and about a decade later a spur ran from it to Lake Weir at Weirsdale. The town's lakeside start still matters: properties near low ground or water can hold rain after heavy storms. Before we pour, we check where water sits on your lot after rain and shape the subgrade so the new slab sheds water instead of trapping it.

Joint layout on large slabs

Big slabs on farm properties crack if they are poured as one unbroken sheet. We cut or tool control joints into a grid of roughly square panels, sized to the slab thickness, so shrinkage cracks follow straight lines instead of wandering across the surface. On barn floors and equipment pads, we lay out joints so they do not land under the wheel paths of heavy equipment, which keeps edges from chipping.

Repairing what is already there

On older family properties, the first job is often a repair. Steps that have pulled away from a porch, a carport slab that has dropped at one corner, or a walk broken by an oak root can each be fixed without redoing the whole property. We replace only the failed sections when the rest is sound.

Summerfield Questions

How thick should a driveway be for farm trucks in Summerfield?

Thicker than a standard car driveway, with rebar and a well-compacted base. We size it at the estimate based on the heaviest vehicles that will use it.

Can you pour a wash pad for equipment?

Yes. We slope wash pads toward a drain or gravel area so water and mud leave the slab instead of pooling.

My lot is near the Sumter County line. Who handles the permit?

It depends on which side of the line the property sits. We confirm the county and check its permit requirements before scheduling.
