Driveways for Ocala Homes Old and New
Concrete driveways in Ocala are mostly replacements rather than first pours. Census data summarized by Point2Homes puts the median Ocala home at 1984, and nearly half of the city's housing went up in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Plenty of those homes still have the original driveway. After 35 to 60 years of Florida rain, root growth and heavier cars and trucks, many are cracked through, sunken at the edges or lifted by a nearby oak.
Signs it is time for a new driveway
- Cracks wide enough to catch a shoe, or cracks that keep growing back after they are filled
- Sections that have sunk or tipped, leaving trip edges or a lip at the garage
- Water that pools on the driveway or runs back toward the house
- Root heave that has lifted slabs near a tree
- Crumbling or flaking surface across large areas
- A driveway too narrow for the vehicles you own now
A few hairline cracks are not a reason to replace a driveway. Those can be sealed. Wide, offset or growing cracks usually mean the base under the slab has moved, and filling them only hides the problem.
What a driveway job involves
Tear-out. The old concrete is broken up and hauled away. Removal is a real line item: HomeGuide lists it at $2 to $6 per square foot.
Grading and base. Ocala's ground is sandy over limestone. Sand drains well but shifts if it is not compacted. We grade for slope away from the house, remove roots and soft spots, add base material where it is needed and compact it in layers.
Forms and reinforcement. Forms set the edges and the slope. Rebar or wire mesh goes in on chairs so it sits inside the slab, not on the ground under it. HomeGuide lists rebar at $1 to $3 per square foot.
Thickness. Four inches is common for cars. HomeGuide recommends 6 inches for heavy vehicles, and in Ocala that often means a truck with a horse trailer, a boat or an RV.
Pour and finish. Most driveways get a broom finish for grip in the rain. Exposed aggregate and stamped borders are options.
Joints and curing. Control joints are cut at planned spacing so cracks form in straight lines inside the joints. Curing starts right after finishing.
Pouring a driveway in Ocala weather
Summer is the hard part. Wikipedia's climate table for Ocala shows average highs around 91 to 92 degrees in July and August, with rain on 17 to 18 days a month. Hot concrete sets fast, and the surface can dry out before the slab below it has hydrated. We start early, dampen the base so the sand does not pull water out of the mix, and keep covers on site. If a morning storm is forecast, we move the day.
Widening, extensions and aprons
Many Ocala driveways were built for one or two cars. Widening a driveway means saw-cutting a clean edge, pinning new concrete to the old with dowels so the two sections move together, and matching the finish as closely as the old surface allows. Where a driveway meets the road, the apron may fall under a driveway or right-of-way permit. Marion County Building Safety lists both among the permits it handles, and addresses inside Ocala city limits go through the City. We check what your address needs before we schedule.
Rural and farm driveways
On acreage, a full-length concrete drive is a big pour. Some owners choose a concrete apron and parking pad near the house and leave the rest as compacted rock. We can price both so you can compare.
Caring for a new driveway
HomeGuide says foot traffic is generally fine after 24 to 48 hours, cars should wait at least 7 days, and heavy vehicles and sealing should wait for the full 28 to 30 day cure. After that, a penetrating sealer every few years helps keep out water and stains. Keep heavy equipment off the edges, which are the weakest part of any slab, and keep sprinklers and downspouts from soaking the ground beside it.

Concrete Driveways Questions
How long does a concrete driveway last?
HomeGuide puts the lifespan of a concrete driveway at 30 to 40 years with basic maintenance. A compacted base, the right thickness and good curing matter more than anything else.
How soon can I drive on a new driveway?
HomeGuide advises waiting at least 7 days before driving a car on it, and the full 28 to 30 day cure before heavy vehicles or sealing.
Can you pour new concrete over my old driveway?
Sometimes a thin overlay can go over sound concrete, but a driveway that is broken, sunken or lifted needs to come out. New concrete over a failed base will crack the same way.
Is a 4-inch or 6-inch driveway better?
Four inches is common for cars. HomeGuide recommends 6 inches for heavy vehicles. If you park a truck with a trailer, a boat or an RV on it, plan on the thicker slab at least where they park.
Do I need a permit to replace my driveway?
It depends on where you live and whether the work touches the road or right-of-way. Marion County handles driveway and right-of-way permits through Building Safety, and the City of Ocala has its own rules. We check before we schedule.
