Concrete That Respects an Old Town
McIntosh is a small, old town in northern Marion County, and the concrete contractors who work there have to match new work to homes and streets that have been around for more than a century. US 441 runs through town and 19 miles south to Ocala. The town covers about 0.71 square miles, all land, at about 102 feet of elevation, and is bordered on the east by Orange Lake.
Citrus lots and Victorian-era plans
In 1849 Baltimore merchant Nehemiah Brush bought a large tract at a government auction in Micanopy that included 4,000 acres. His family and partners later laid the area out as building lots and ten-acre citrus plots. The town was platted in 1885, a second plat followed in 1888, and McIntosh was incorporated on May 22, 1913. Its population has barely changed in a century: 440 in 1920, 453 in 2000 and 463 in 2020.
A town that has stayed this small for this long has a lot of old concrete and masonry. When we work on an older property here, we:
- Match the existing look where we can, with plain broom finishes or simple borders that suit older homes
- Protect old trees, routing walks around large roots rather than cutting them without discussion
- Tie new to old carefully, with clean isolation joints where fresh concrete meets an old foundation or porch
Living next to a big lake
Orange Lake, across the line in Alachua County, covers about 12,550 acres and drains through the Orange Creek Basin to the Ocklawaha River. It is known for its floating islands and bass fishing. Homes on the lake side of McIntosh face the usual lakeside questions: slopes toward the water, damp low spots and boats to park. We plan drainage so runoff spreads across the yard rather than straight into the lake, and pour boat and trailer slabs with extra thickness and rebar.
Typical McIntosh projects
1. Walkway replacement for old, broken front walks, often with a slightly wider path 2. Porch step rebuilding with even risers and a proper landing 3. Driveway replacement where old drives have cracked and crumbled at the street 4. Patios for shaded back yards, poured on a compacted base 5. Stamped concrete for owners who want a brick or stone look without loose pavers 6. Concrete slabs for sheds, garden buildings and carports
Small jobs welcome
In a town of fewer than 500 people, many projects are modest. A single cracked panel, a broken step or a short walk to a side door is a real job to us. We prepare each one properly, because a small slab on a poor base fails just as surely as a big one.
Driveways off US 441
Homes with driveways on or near US 441 deal with faster traffic and heavier vehicles than quiet side streets. The point where the drive meets the road takes the most stress. We thicken that apron edge, compact the base well and keep the transition smooth so cars turning in from the highway do not jolt or scrape. Where a drive meets a state or county road, permits for road-edge work may apply, and we check before we start.
Permits
McIntosh is an incorporated town, so town rules may apply in addition to Marion County requirements. We confirm what your project needs before we start, and we plan deliveries along US 441 to keep traffic moving through town.

McIntosh Questions
Can new concrete match the look of my older McIntosh home?
We can use plain broom finishes, simple borders or stamped patterns that suit older homes, and we tie new work to old with clean joints.
Will you take on a small repair like one broken step?
Yes. Small jobs are welcome, and we prepare the base and forms the same way we would for a larger pour.
What should I know about pouring near Orange Lake?
Lakeside lots often slope and stay damp. We plan drainage so runoff spreads across the yard, and size boat or trailer slabs for the weight.
