Decorative Concrete With a Purpose
Stamped concrete gives a poured slab the look of natural stone, slate, brick or wood planks. In Ocala it fits well with the city's character. Downtown was rebuilt in brick after the 1883 fire, and the historic district along East Fort King Street is known for its Victorian homes. A brick or cobblestone pattern can echo that. Out in horse country, flagstone and slate patterns suit ranch houses and farm properties. We use stamped concrete on patios, walkways, pool decks, entry areas and driveway borders.
How stamping works
The slab is placed and screeded like any other. Color goes in one of two ways: blended into the truck load so the whole slab is tinted, or dusted on top as a color hardener and floated in. Then comes a release powder or liquid, often a darker shade, which keeps the mats from sticking and leaves an antique tone in the low spots. With the concrete still soft enough to take an impression, the finishers lay textured mats side by side, walk them in, and touch up seams and edges by hand.
The window for that work is narrow. If the mats go down while the concrete is too soft, the texture sags; if they go down once it has stiffened, the pattern comes out faint. Heat shrinks the window further. Wikipedia's climate table puts Ocala's average July high at 92 degrees, so in summer we start early, keep each pour to a size the crew can stamp in time, and often stamp a large area in sections.
Patterns and colors
- Ashlar slate and flagstone: the most common patio patterns, with irregular stone shapes and natural texture.
- Cobblestone and brick: good for walkways, entry areas and borders, and a nod to Ocala's Brick City history.
- Wood plank: the look of a wood deck without the rot or termites.
- Seamless textures: stone texture without the grout lines, for a quieter look.
- Borders: a stamped band around a plain broom-finished field, which gives a decorative look at a lower cost.
Color choice matters in full sun. Lighter tans, grays and buff colors stay cooler underfoot than dark charcoal or red. Around a pool, that difference is noticeable.
Sealing and slip resistance
Every stamped slab gets sealed. The sealer richens the color, shields the surface from wear and makes stains easier to lift. HomeGuide notes that stamped concrete needs resealing every 2 to 3 years to stop color fading, and in strong Florida sun we would keep to the short end of that range on uncovered slabs. Sealer can also make a smooth stamped surface slick when it is wet. Ocala gets rain on 13 to 18 days a month from June through September, so on pool decks, steps and walkways we add a non-slip grit to the sealer.
Stamped concrete vs pavers
HomeGuide lists basic stamped concrete at $8 to $13 per square foot and paver patios at $10 to $17. Pavers can be lifted and reset if the ground settles. Stamped concrete is one continuous slab, so it has no joints for weeds or ants to work into, but cracks show and repairs are harder to blend. A good base and well-placed control joints are the key to stamped concrete that ages well.
What makes stamped concrete last
- A compacted base, because a crack through a stamped pattern is hard to hide
- Control joints hidden in the pattern's grout lines where possible
- Proper curing, especially in summer
- Sealer applied after the cure and renewed on schedule
Care
Sweep and rinse regularly, and clean up mildew in shady spots. Avoid harsh chemicals and pressure washers set too close, which can strip the sealer. Watch for areas where water no longer beads up. That is the sign it is time to reseal.

How Stamped Concrete Gets Done
1. Pick the look
We bring pattern and color samples to the estimate and talk about sun and slip.
2. Prepare and pour
Base, forms and reinforcement, then a pour sized to the crew and the weather.
3. Color and stamp
Color hardener or integral color, release agent, then stamping at the right moment.
4. Clean and seal
Release is washed off and the slab is sealed after it cures.

Why Choose Us for Stamped Concrete
Pours sized to the heat
In summer we stamp in sections so every part of the slab gets pressed at the right time.
Grip where it counts
Non-slip additive in the sealer on pool decks, steps and walkways.
Stamped Concrete Questions
How long does stamped concrete take to cure?
HomeGuide gives stamped concrete 7 to 10 days to cure. Light foot traffic is usually fine after a day or two, and the sealer goes on once the cure is done.
How often does stamped concrete need sealing?
HomeGuide says every 2 to 3 years to keep the color from fading. Uncovered slabs in full sun need it on the shorter end.
Is stamped concrete slippery?
It can be when the sealer is wet. We mix a non-slip grit into the sealer on pool decks, steps and walkways.
Does stamped concrete crack?
All concrete can crack. A compacted base, reinforcement and control joints placed along pattern lines keep cracks small and less visible.
